Film & Television: Bubba Ho-Tep

Campbell plays the decrepit Elvis flawlessly, drawing us in with his introspective commentary on a life gone by, remembering his wife,

Priscilla, daughter, Lisa Marie, and his movies (all bad, in his opinion). Presley’s companion is Jack, played by Ossie Davis.
Jack believes he is John F. Kennedy, claiming his assassination was faked by Lyndon B. Johnson. "But, Jack..." Elvis says hesitantly, "you're black."

JFK nods in confirmation. "They dyed me." Thus is the beginning of a great friendship, as the two go on to battle a dreadfully evil Egyptian Soul Sucker, who finds his way to the rest home to prey upon the weak souls of the aged.

Bubba Ho-Tep is hilarious, ludicrous and ridiculous. At the same time, it has a thoughtful element, between the King’s reflections on his incredible life, and the friendship that develops between Elvis and Jack. Overall, it’s a really fun ride, the kind of movie you can see over and over again, laughing just as hard every time.

Bubba Ho-Tep is a movie about a ‘King’ searching to prove he has not lost his legendary status. In his immortal words, paraphrased, of course from his buddy JFK, “Ask not what your rest home can do for you, but what you can do for your rest home.”

Bubba Ho-Tep will be released on DVD May 25. www.bubbahotep.com
