Tulips in black and white are a beautiful and rare sight. Oh Susannah,
originally from BC, was my black and white tulip - understated demeanor,
yet potent vocals, beautiful song artistry and dynamics that rolled
like deep green grassy hills on a foggy morning. This year's Tulip
Festival had song and artistry but rarely did the two meet. The
Artisan's Tent was a marvel of jewellry, art and creative gifts
that should be repeated. Jacksoul and Wide Mouth Mason are also
definite favourites of mine but with an unlimited tulip pass saddled
on my bony wrist for 8 days and minimal talented options, the last
day was a long wait. I lost patience and snipped it. My frustration
festered entirely around the choice of performers: Trooper? Honeymoon
Suite? Glass Tiger? |

While
my suburban friends aren't exactly on top of
lesser-knownbut
more talented bands like The Constantines, Seismic or Pilate, they,
too, laughed when they saw the line-up.The
last time I wanted to go see Trooper
I
drank pepsi out of aluminum cans, bought chips for a quarter and
had no idea what to do with blue eyeshadow. (Okay, so I still don't
know what to do with the blessed stuff.) Is it budget problems for
organizers or are they just trapped in the early '80s? Has there
been a change in the music guard without the same connections to
the biz or have they just presumed that in Ottawa, we don't care
as long as there are tulips? I'm willing to bet that attendance
was down, not to mention the bottom dollar. Tulip organizers need
to improve their band choices or leave the music festing to someone
else. Why not work on getting more world music to fit the theme
of artistry? Set the music up so people can dance.
Why not make it shorter if there's a challenge filling the music
bills?
Don't try to be all things to all people and you might be onto something.
