Boxes, bags and safekeepers
Every
wonder what people store in their closets besides skeletons and themselves?
Bags, bits, bugs galore, and more.
Some people revere closets like my Aunt Emma whose exquisite collection
of gift bags and boxes can be seen here to the right.
Some people don't have closets: students or people who live in some
old houses. I remember my paternal grandparents never did. They lived
in a small outport community in Newfoundland called Fox Harbour. They
hung their clothes on hangers first, then on hooks on the wall, six
and seven layers thick. They looked like headless bodies in your peripheral
view.
For some people, closets are not enough to store all the collectibles,
both treasured and despised; they need basements and sheds and storage
rooms, too. Others pile their stuff they aren't using in an unused bedroom
-- so they don't use the room or the stuff in it. Makes you wonder what
they're saving it for. It's like a savings account of things to be used
someday -- in retirement, maybe? What would happen if we actually went
through all our closets and actually got rid of what we don't use or
need? How hard would that be? It's partly: who has the time! But I know
some people who just cannot part with their stuff: you know who you
are!
Others view their closets as the place they can hide what they consider
the worst things they own. What's the worst thing in your closet? Me?
I can't remember. It's been a while since I've looked in there.
